Runza casserole is a comforting and hearty dish that captures the essence of the beloved Nebraska staple, the Runza sandwich, in a convenient and delicious casserole form. This recipe transforms the traditional Runza—filled with seasoned ground beef, onions, and cabbage, all tucked inside a soft bread dough—into a one-dish meal perfect for busy weeknights or casual family gatherings.
Combining savory ground beef with tender cabbage and rich, melted cheese, Runza casserole offers a satisfying blend of flavors and textures that will quickly become a favorite in your meal rotation. This is a wonderful recipe for a decadent and rich lunch I love to make over the weekends.
At its core, Runza casserole features a flavorful mixture of ground beef and onions, sautéed until perfectly browned and aromatic. This is combined with shredded cabbage, which adds a delightful crunch and slight sweetness. The cabbage is cooked just enough to soften and meld with the beef, creating a hearty and flavorful filling. A touch of seasoning, including salt, pepper, and garlic powder, ensures the filling is well-seasoned and delicious.
The casserole is topped with a layer of crescent roll dough or biscuit dough, which bakes into a golden, flaky crust that perfectly contrasts the savory filling underneath. This dough layer adds a comforting bread element and helps hold the casserole together, making it easy to serve and enjoy.
To prepare, simply layer the beef and cabbage mixture in a baking dish, cover with the dough, and bake until bubbly and golden. The result is a dish that’s both comforting and convenient, offering all the flavors of a Runza sandwich in a hearty casserole format. Serve it with a side salad or some steamed vegetables, and you’ve got a complete, satisfying meal to please everyone at the table. Runza casserole is a beautiful way to enjoy the classic flavors of this Midwestern favorite with minimal fuss and maximum flavor.
